Lyme Regis is bursting with wonderful places to eat and drink. Choose from fresh seafood, delicious afternoon teas and warming pub food, all set amongst winding cobbled streets or on the town’s charming seafront.
Even though all our holiday cottages are all self-catering, there’s something magical about treating yourself to a delicious meal out during your holiday. In fact, the only trouble is choosing where to go! To help you decide, we’ve chosen twelve of our favourite Lyme Regis eateries to seek out during your cottage break.
The best restaurants in Lyme Regis
This contemporary cocktail bar serves great casual plates of food, perfect for sharing while watching people stroll along the seafront, or taking in a magnificent view of the waves – all made all the more breathtaking by the large floor-to-ceiling windows. The small but diverse menu covers everything from toasted sourdough sandwiches and generous burgers to fresh fish and seafood. It’s the perfect place to duck into after a long walk on the beach!
River Cottage is a 10-minute drive from Lyme Regis, but the unique culinary experience is certainly worth the journey! Book to join one of their regular Friday and Saturday night feasts, or perhaps a delicious Sunday Lunch, in their 18th Century barn. The whole evening is completely different from your usual restaurant, from the tractor ride up and down the hill, followed by canopies in their yurt, all the way to the meal itself. The Head Chef himself will tell the story of the four courses, which change throughout the year depending on what has been foraged, caught or grown on the farm (or by neighbouring farms) that day. Meanwhile, the long communal tables create a friendly, welcoming atmosphere. It’s the perfect way to appreciate Dorset’s incredible produce!
Hix Oyster & Fish House
Located within throwing distance of the sea, overlooking Lyme Regis’ historic fishing port, Hix Oyster & Fish House has an almost unbeatable location. Being so close to the water, it’s no surprise that they serve only the freshest seafood, cooked simply so that the flavours speak for themselves. The restaurant is owned by celebrated chef, restaurateur and food writer Mark Hix, and the menu changes regularly to feature the most recent catch, accompanied with a small selection of delicious house dishes. But whether you go for lobster and chips or oysters with champagne, every meal is made special by the spectacular view from the floor-to-ceiling windows.
The Cobb Arms
As the name suggests, you'll find this cosy pub where the Cobb meets the harbour. This cosy hideaway boasts panoramic views over Lyme Bay, offering a welcoming spot to relax after a bracing walk along the coast. The Cobb Arms is a popular choice with both locals and visitors alike, and serves a lovely menu carefully put together using locally-sourced meat, seafood and vegetables. To accompany your meal, why not choose from their extensive selection of wines, guns and ales?
Just minutes from the beach, you'll find the popular Poco Pizza. Open Monday to Saturday from 17.30 until 21.00, they serve authentic wood-fired pizza made from real Italian ingredients. You can either book yourself a table in their cosy, atmospheric restaurant or pick up some takeaway (amazing when eaten with a sea view!). Either way, you're bound to enjoy a delicious meal - the pizzas have even been called the 'best this side of Italy'!
Italia Ristorante & Pizzeria
If the idea of an authentic Italian meal takes your fancy, Italia Ristorante & Pizzeria has a lovely selection of freshly-prepared dishes to choose from. From freshly cooked pizzas to pastas in rich sauces, there's plenty to indulge in.
If you’re after a meat-free option during your time in Lyme Regis, be sure to pay a visit to Tierra Kitchen. They serve exclusively vegetarian and vegan dishes, which you can enjoy on their riverside terrace in the artisan section of the town. The menu is ever-changing and also includes a wide selection of sweet puddings, all made in-house. They also have their own deli, where you can choose from a wide selection of delicious meat-free foods to take home with you.
The Anchor at Seatown
This cosy, traditional pub is another fantastic choice for digging into some fresh shellfish and fish, while also enjoying a view of the ocean. At the Anchor, you can take your pick from mussels, scallops, lobster, sea bass, brill and much more! Alternatively, there are plenty of locally-sourced meat dishes to choose from, including delicious steaks. If you can, try and book a table for their lovely Sunday lunch – delicious after a long walk along the coast, especially when washed down with a pint of one of their draught beers or ales! The Anchor was named VisitEngland’s pub of the year in 2017, so don’t be surprised if it’s busy!
The Harbour Inn
The family-run Harbour Inn can be found right on the beach at Lyme Regis, and is another spot to sample some delicious fresh seafood – their whitebait and chips is delicious! As well as their lovely restaurant and seafront veranda, the Harbour has its own private beach area, so the kids can run around on the sand while you relax with a drink. All the food is freshly prepared using local produce, and dogs are welcome in the bar restaurant.
The Pilot Boat
The Pilot Boat is a popular destination for a casual bite or a larger meal after a day on the beach. With their informal pub area - ideal for a quick drink - and their 110 seater restaurant, you can stay for as long (or as short) as you want. The open-plan kitchen, pizza oven and standalone bar make for a welcoming, intimate place to spend time with friends and family. Whether you just fancy a selection of snacks and beer bites in the bar, or are dreaming of tucking into pizza and other modern classics in the restaurant, this is a wonderful place to relax and unwind.
If you're looking for something slightly different to enjoy on the beach, why not pop into Red Panda? They offer a mouth-watering menu of Asian street food for takeaway and eating in (although there is limited seating). They are a plastic-free restaurant who serve vegetarian and vegan options, so everyone can treat themselves to a selection of delicious dishes to try, from sushi to Bao buns and fresh salads.
The Alexandra boasts an award-winning restaurant and wine cellar, making it a great choice for a celebratory meal. With an ever-changing seasonal menu using ingredients sourced from local producers, you can choose from a range of delicious dishes, including a 'local to Lyme' sample menu.
