Hide Shaftesbury and surrounding villages intro
At 700 feet (210m) above sea level, Ashmore is one of the highest villages in southern England and the highest in Dorset. Ashmore is defined by its pond, around which this small village on the Wiltshire border is arrayed. While there’s no particular outstanding feature to the village, it is quintessentially English, totally unspoilt and quite, quite lovely. And, thanks to its elevation, it does have one particular selling point: “On a clear day,” enthused Monica Hutchings in her 1965 book Inside Dorset, “the view is quite outstanding, and in all those miles, not one town is visible.”
